You may not think too much about skipping a night washing off your makeup before bed, but the truth is neglecting your skin health can cause long-term problems. Your skin is exposed to the sun and environmental pollutants daily - once the damage is done, it can be difficult to reverse it. Whether you have a minimal or extensive skincare routine it is important to include skincare in your life. The younger you are when you start it, the better, but it is never too late to establish healthy habits.
THE IMPORTANCE OF SKINCARE IN YOUR LIFE
Skin Sheds Daily: You’re shedding skin cells throughout the day, so it’s important to keep your skin glowing and in good condition. An effective routine can help prevent acne, treat wrinkles, and help keep your skin looking its best. You may think your skin is healthy, glowing, and beautiful today, but there is no guarantee that will be the case tomorrow. If you don’t care for it now, the skin that is revealed in the future can be dull and full of imperfections unless you are utilizing a proper skincare routine.
Your Skin Will Look More Youthful: As you age, your skin’s cells turn over more slowly, making it look less radiant. Using a quality skincare line can help remove dead skin cells so your body will replace them with newer, more youthful cells. Beautiful skin is a lifelong process - if you want gorgeous skin decades from now, the choices you make today will help that happen. At the same time, negative skincare routines now can harm your skin in the future.
Prevention Is Easier Than Correction: Having beautiful skin as you get older means making smart choices throughout your life. Wearing sunscreen, washing your face daily, and using a good moisturizer can prevent invasive treatments in the future. Just as doing the right things now can help you down the road, bad skincare choices can have lifelong impacts. Taking the time to involve yourself in a skincare routine daily is easier and takes less time than having to see dermatologists to address skin issues. When you take care of your skin health, you avoid issues down the line that can be costly.
Your Self-Confidence Will Get A Boost: Skincare is part of a healthy lifestyle. Those who take the time to wash their face in the morning and at night are more likely to be making healthy choices throughout their day. The saying goes “beauty is only skin deep” but when your skin looks better, you’ll feel better about yourself. Instead of trying to cover up skin problems by relying on cosmetic products, start a habit routine on skincare. Your face is the first part of what others see so go with your best face forward, and a daily skincare routine can help you do exactly this.

WHAT BELONGS IN YOUR SKIN CARE CABINET (IN THE ORDER YOU SHOULD APPLY)
The following components can create a good, effective skincare routine:
Cleanser: Cleansers are great for removing dead skin, pollutants, oil, dirt, and bacteria. In the morning and before bed, make sure you are washing your skin with a gentle cleanser, taking care not to scrub too hard. Make sure to rinse with warm water, as hot water removes natural oils and causes your skin to become dehydrated. If you have dry skin, you’ll want to choose a cleanser that doesn’t have alcohol, and if your skin tends to be oily, look for an oil-free option (you may want to consider using a toner as well.) Avoid cleansers that have sulfates which can strip the natural skin barrier. If you have sensitive skin, choose a fragrance-free foaming cleanser.
Toner: Toner is applied after washing your face and can smooth, soften, and calm skin. They often contain ingredients that replenish and restore nutrients to your skin and can diminish redness and dry patches.
Serum: A great (and optional) addition to your skincare routine is a serum. Serums contain ingredients like antioxidants or retinol that support skin health in several ways and can help address specific issues. They are meant to calm redness, improve texture, and promote firmness.
Eye Cream: You must apply an eye cream at least once a day to help keep your eye area healthy and youthful. Because the skin around your eye is very sensitive it needs extra attention to maintain its collagen. By using an eye cream early on in your skincare journey, you can ensure your eyelids won’t lose elasticity or smoothness.
Spot Treatment: If your dermatologist prescribed you any acne creams, you should apply them after your skin is cleansed and dry. Apply your retinol or spot treatment to reduce fine lines, pore size, reduce oil, unclog pores, and eliminate blemishes.
Moisturizer: Moisturizers should be used every time you wash your face - even if you have oily skin (choose a lightweight oil-free or gel product.) Moisturizers are meant to prevent your skin from drying out, leaving your skin hydrated and smooth. They are most effective when applied while your skin is slightly damp to seal in moisture. When you use retinol and spot treatments, your skin can become increasingly dry and irritated; using a moisturizer can help add more hydration to your skin.
Sunscreen: Even if your moisturizer has SPF, it doesn’t hurt to use a separate sunscreen daily. Make sure your sunscreen protects against both UVA and UVB rays. Choose one that provides broad-spectrum protection and has an SPF of at least 30. When you are exposed, reapply every two hours. If skin cancer and sun damage aren’t enough to convince you, UV exposure is also the number one cause of wrinkles, uneven skin tone, loss of firmness, and aging signs.
Exfoliator: Here’s a product you might not need or want to apply every day. Exfoliators are optional and can be used after a cleanser but before a moisturizer, as it helps to remove flaky skin by increasing skin cell turnover. If you have dry skin, including winter-air-induced dry skin, you may exfoliate more than usual, but you should still keep it to a minimum. Removing dead skin and buildup reveals smoother skin and clearer pores, however, to prevent damage to the protective barrier of your skin, scrubs should be used a maximum of once or twice per week.
Harsh products can leave the skin dry or irritated leaving vulnerable cracks in the skin. Our skin is the largest barrier against infection that we have and it works hard every day to protect our bodies from harmful elements. To keep this barrier healthy and strong, we need to know how to keep our skin moist and healthy. Skincare products should be free of scents or perfumes. Soaps should be gentle and moisturizers should be used daily. If you help your skin stay hydrated, your skin will look younger, more elastic, and will glow beautifully. The easiest way to remember when you should be doing what for your skin is to think of it like this: morning skin care should focus on prevention and protection for the day while your nighttime routine should focus on cleansing and repair.
WHY SHOULD YOU AVOID POOR-QUALITY SKINCARE PRODUCTS?
A good skincare routine is only as good as the products you use. While good quality products can help your skin look better now as well as in the future, clean and 'non-toxic' ingredients are much better for the health of the skin to help slow down the aging process. Poor quality skincare products are more likely to cause the following negative effects:
● Ineffective results
● Infections
● Allergic reactions such as rashes
● Worsening problems by clogging pores, causing breakouts, etc.
