We all desire clear skin. Contrary to popular belief, many men value healthy skin just as much as women do. “The cosmeceutical industry is responsible for manufacturing many toiletry items such as face wash, body wash, and other beauty products that have been focused on the female demographic. Skincare products are commonly glamourized to appeal to the needs of women, however, because of this many men feel these products are necessary,” said Joseph Kennedy, experienced pharmacist.

Proper hygiene consisting of classic soap and water can be effective, but if you are looking to get clear skin as a man, let's take it one step further. When it comes to a routine, the simpler the better, and for men, this couldn't be more true. One of the things that most people struggle with is where to start, so start simple.

Keep it minimal and find the right products for your specific skin type. “An ideal skincare routine should be as simple as it can be so that they are not overwhelmed with the number of products they need to be using every day. The routine should consist of the ABCs of skincare: vitamin A, sunblock, vitamin C, and cleanser and moisturizer,” commented Dr. Alain Michon, Medical Director at the Ottawa Skin Clinic.

An effective facial regimen can be completed in a three easy step system: a cleanser, moisturizer, and a beard wash. Don't make skincare a chore by overcomplicating it. Skin Ceuticals Simply Clean is a great option for men as it is a simple cleanser that works with most skin types. It cleanses, exfoliates, and soothes normal combination or oily skin. The SkinCeuticals Daily Moisture is a great moisturizer as it is a simple moisturizer that works with most skin types and protects the skin barrier without leaving a greasy feeling.”

It is helpful to be mindful of your skin type to attack any skin concerns. “An easy way to discover your skin type is to wash your face with whatever cleanser you have, wait five minutes, and see how your skin reacts. If your skin still feels a bit oily afterward or as if you need to cleanse again, you could have oily skin. If it feels dry (or dry in some areas), it's likely to be dry or combination skin, and if nothing happens, it's likely normal,” advised Tova Palomino, esthetician and CEO/Founder of God-ish Skin.

Adopt the right products in your routine while being mindful of what you are putting on your skin. “When it comes to acne-prone skin, your genetics, hormones, and what you consume are going to play a significant factor. If nothing else, make sure you're paying attention to how external and internal factors impact your body and skin. Key ingredients to avoid for good skin: parabens, sulfates, fragrances, and dyes,” continued Tova Palomino. What you put into your body matters just as much as what you put on it.

If you are a man of color, steer clear of dairy, gluten, and any other ingredients that can wreak havoc on the skin. “Dairy, gluten, and soy can throw off our hormones, cause breakouts, and for men, increase estrogen levels. Instead, focus on making sure you're getting the necessary amount of Vitamin C, Vitamin D, and Zinc. Lastly, take a look at the laundry detergent you are using. A lot of detergents can damage the skin and can cause inflammation, so stick to plant-based detergents.”

Another thing to look out for as a man is the maintenance of your beard. Don’t neglect your facial hair! Make sure you are washing your beard frequently to eliminate any bacteria. Beard wash or shampoo will cleanse this area of the face and help avoid infections. Incorporate your beard into your daily skincare routine.

Although most men like to use all-purpose products like a two-in-one shampoo/conditioner or soap for their face, hands, and body, it is best to use products that are targeted to meet their specific needs. Facial products should be more sensitive than those for the other parts of the body.

“When the skin's microbiome is healthy it benefits skin quality, reduces inflammation, redness and acne, all of this is enough to make you feel refreshed and even can improve your self-esteem,” said Kennedy. Normalize men’s self-care and personal maintenance. If you are looking for a way to get clear skin for men, adopt the right routine for you! Be consistent and you will see results.
